"Barak Up Front" - The quilt

This is my first posting! Woo Hoo! I thought that I would start out with one of the most upfront issues of today, the presidential election. I am a fiber artist, quilter and Obama supporter. I was prompted by and email from moveOn.org to enter a contest to create art that was reflective of Obama's campaign. The winners of the contest will have their artwork displayed at the Democratic convention this week. Well... I didn't win, but I still very happy with the piece I created.

This was the first time I have ever replicated a person face, I prefer to create original images. I decided to go for it and give it a try. I started of with an image I found on some ad material, enlarged it and copied it on to patchwork. The patchwork fabric consist of various shades skin tone fabrics. I did it this way to show Obama's multi-cultural heritage and to illustrate the fact that his face is literally representative of the nation. Also, I wanted to make it a multimedia piece, so I incorporated a piece of a sign from the Ohio primary, a newspaper clipping, and metal eyelets.
